GCC has gone from > cpp | cc1(plus) | cpp | as to cpp | cc1 | as. gcc never runs cpp after cc1*. The assembler itself has a built-in comment remover that, I guess, gets disabled by some switch gcc throws at it. Run "gcc -v foo.c" to see all the steps and switches gcc uses.
