I don't do this stuff myself, but I picked up a copy of _Advanced
Programmer's Guide to SuperVGAs_, _The advanced Programmer's Graphic
Library_, Volume II, George Sutty and Steve Blair,, Brady -- Simon &
Schuster, 1990, ISBN 0-13-010455-8, from an office used book sale. I
pulled this down to see if it answered the earlier question, and it
looks like the vertical flyback can be filtered out from an interrupt.
I don't trust my understanding enough to type in enough to be helpful,
but check out chapter 3, "VGA Registers", which seems to have
everything you need to avoid waiting in a hot loop for vertical
retrace.
