Some people recently complained:
-- Why is DJGPP so slow?
I had this problem. A simple 'hello world' took minutes to compile. This
improved in a radical way when I configured EMM386 to:
DEVICE = EMM386.EXE on ram 2048.
previously, I only provided for 1024K bytes of EMS. I do not install a
DPMI host. Seems like DJGPP thrives best on +1.5Mb EMS or something. I
really have no expertise on DOS (I use DJGPP and loads of other utils to
give me a 'UNIX' feel on DOS), so if what I say isn't entirely correct or
relevant, I'm sorry; It did work for me, though!
Hope this helps!
