What exactly does the -m486 compiling command do?

And the top 0xf reaons why I use DJGPP:

0xf) 32 bit compilers: good.
0xe) 16 bit compilers: bad.
0xd) I like big ints.
0xc) I like big arrays.
0xb) Its free!
0xa) The name D. J. Delorie reminds me of B. J. Birdie. (Toronto joke.)
0x9) You can get new releases via ftp.
0x8) Makes you feel a little like you are a big, powerful UNIX user, when in
fact all that you have is a PC.
0x7) It makes my code work a lot faster than Turbo C did.
0x6) I like the name GNU. (although I can't pronounce it.)
0x5) They send me mail.
0x4) When you are confused, you can bother the author with your questions.
0x3) I don't have to worry about not owning QEMM or any other memory manager.
0x2) I don't have to worry about writing programs that work under Windows 3.1.
0x1) When I misuse pointers, my programs last longer than they did in TC.
0x0) There are at least a million command line options that I will never
    know about.
