Based on reading a lot of GNU code, I'd guess that GCC never uses fread()
and fwrite(), but read() and write() when dealing with large blocks. I didn't
look at the actual GCC code, though. But that's beyond the point. As far as
I saw during my measurements, the actual IO takes an insignificant
(circa 15%) fraction of the total compilation time, so IO efficiency is not
the issue here.
