GNU make seems to crash DV/X. It may be a memory shortage problem.
Sorry I don't have full information on this, but here's what I do
know:
Last night I got DJGPP installed, and was pleased to find that GNU
Make 3.69 seemed to work fine on my machine:
AMI 486DX 50MHz motherboard
AMI caching SCSI-2 controller, 4MB cache
16MB RAM
and with my system:
IBM DOS/V 5.02 (Japanese character file names, else seems to be 100%
MS-DOS 5 compatible)
QEMM/386 6.03 (no QDPMI)
AMI ASPI kernel (for the SCSI controller)
COREL SCSI ASPI driver
assorted Japanese keyboard and display drivers
4DOS 4.01
So I started DV/X and attempted to build GhostScript using GNU make in
a DV/X DOS window. I've had various results. First, make started,
but then exited with a message that there was no room for GO32 to
load. Unfortunately I can't be more precise, I've been unable to
duplicate this behavior. Since it was my standard freshly-booted
configuration, I can say that there was 448KB available when make loaded.
This surprised me a bit since I've never had GO32 fail to load due
to memory shortage in such a DOS window before, even as a subprocess.
Since then, attempting to make GhostScript (four or five tries)
has resulted in an attempt to compile the next target, and then DV/X
crashes, requiring a hard boot, about a second after the compiler
loads (after the disk activity stops, which is usually some time after
the "gcc -O -c target.c" message prints). I don't think the
differences in configuration among these tries are significant; I
removed the Japanese drivers, put them back, tried closing some of the
other windows, etc.
I don't have time to do much investigation of this, I guess I'll
just revert to NDMAKE and DMAKE for now. I may try the real mode GCC
as well. But there is a warning on GNU make with DV/X for now.
