Thanks for all the replies I received about gcc and floating point on
a 486 system. As many of you guessed, my machine has a 486SX chip as
opposed to 486DX, and the SX chips don't support floating point.
Now I know what the difference is, something I haven't seen in any
amount of PC advertising/marketing material.
It still seems that there is something strange about how the CPU behaves
which means that the behaviour of the standard djgpp emulator isn't
correct. I'll investigate further and report on this list if I have
any firm conclusions. Thanks again to all those who took the time and
trouble to reply - it's appreciated.
