Thanks to everybody, you all have been very kind. In any case the 
ultimate answer, if you want a djgpp version of gnuplot, is this:
get the latest sources from ftp.dartmouth.edu (/pub/gnuplot/gnuplot34.tar.Z)
and use makefile.djg to compile them. It works fine.
