> I am looking for EMACS or a reasonable lookalike based on GNU.???
There are at least three versions of GNU Emacs for MSDOS/Windows:
* "OEmacs", which I maintain, is a version of GNU Emacs that can run
under MSDOS, inside a Windows DOS box (note: it is *NOT* a native
WinApp), or under DESQview/X (as a "native X-window" application).
The current version is a beta-test version based upon GNU Emacs
V19.16. If anyone wants more info (like where to get it), send
email.
* "Demacs", which is an old version of GNU Emacs V18.55/18.57 that runs
under MSDOS only. Originally, it could not run under Windows, but
I've heard that it is supposedly possible to run demacs in a Windows
DOS box if you get the latest DPMI-aware GO32 extender. You can get a
copy from Simtel20 and mirror sites.
* "WinEmacs", which is some version of Lucid Emacs 19 that runs under MS
Windows only. Although it cannot run under MSDOS, the latest version
appears to support a number of MS Windows features, like
drag-and-drop. However, the version that is available is a "demo";
anyone who uses it is expected to pay something like $199 for support,
and I've heard that the "demo" contains nagging messages reminding you
to buy the support.
