I'd wager that you can avoid hanging by:
running chkdsk and any disk-compression filesystem fix routines,
and (especially) recovering some DOS memory by leaving out some
tsr's and/or device drivers.
When there's very little regular memory, go32 reports that
it can't run, but when available regular memory's on the edge,
gcc hangs for me.
