I was a bit too brief in my previous response re: DOs 6.0
and EMM386 with gcc. 
To use EMS with EMM386 (thus enabling gcc) you must remove the
NOEMS switch and replace it with the RAM switch. 
If you select the option to allow EMS support in Memmaker,
it does this for you.
