1. I have tested DEmacs again, and it does seem to have a timeout on
the startup tutorial screen. So it probably is not grabbing
characters from the serial port after all.
2. Mike Castle noted that serial ports weren't a problem if the
program didn't run in background. Under DV/X, it *is* possible to
force a program *not* to run in background if you set "Direct writes
to screen" ON and "virtualize text" OFF. This seems to have
successfully solved the problem with DEmacs, as he suggested.
(Obviously, not running in background is not that big an objection
with an editor.) This solution does have the defect that you lose
your desktop while working in DEmacs (or whatever program you are
using). Also, on cheap screens like mine you get a distracting
"boing" from the screen mode change when you hit the Desq key (usually
tapping the Alt key) to get back to your DesqTop (mouse doesn't work
since DEmacs is in Full Screen Direct Write mode). Note: DEmacs is
lurking (rather, napping) in the background even as I type this :-)
