I notice that umask() is hard-coded to return octal 644.  However,
umask() is supposed to be a mask of mode bits to TURN OFF when
creating a file.  It looks to me like the value is the inverse of what
it should be.  Therefore, I believe that the return value should be
changed to something like octal 022.
