Boy, do I feel stupid.  DJ gently reminded me that linking is
order-sensitive.  So the correct invocation would be:

        gcc hello.c -lpc

Worked like a charm.  Thanks, DJ!

BTW, I think this project is an absolutely terrific idea, and an
amazing implementation---a bang-up job!  I feel right at home when I
do coding work and move from my SPARC 2 to my Compaq LTE/Lite.
