I don't want to start a benchmark rwar. I also did never spent any thoughts
on tuning my system with regard to gcc compilation speed. I just took the
28 s as a challenge and did a 

cd c:\dj\samples\compress
make

and looked at my wristwatch: 5s
until COMPRESS.EXE appeared.

my system configuration?

Oh yes, a 486/33/256KCache, 16MB, smartdrv.exe/sys from WIN3.1 installed.
QEMM386-6.0. Or did I play against the rules of the game :)
