I have done exactly what you state with DJGPP.  I perform large numbers
of transient analyses of dynamic mechanical systems (algebraically
constrained non-linear partial differential equations - otherwise
known as differential-algebraic equations).  GCC has done well by these
and the numbers match quite well when compared with similar analyses using
32-bit FORTRAN compilers.
