This is naturaly possible, if your /etc/passwd and /etc/group
files aren't correctly filled. The correspondence between UID,
GID and name is essential. You should check the `security' entry
in the files properties box in NT explorer.

It would be nice, to send me an STRACE=0x50 output of a situation,
where these `permission denied' messages are produced. You should
then send your /etc/passwd and /etc/group files, too.
