On a related note:

    Is there any way to get a hold of a handle given the unix-type
    file descriptor in cygwin?

This would allow certain work arounds to be used in user code (without
modifying cygwin's dll).  It would also be handy for using devices;
A program could open a device and do normal file io on it, and could
still use the devices IO control operations through the win32 handle.
