these two issues are _closely_ related. i don't mean to flame either.

i can see 3 ways to fix the problem you've mentioned.

1) change cygwin gcc so that it doesn't look into non-/mingw/
directories when doing headers search.
2) add empty <strings.h> in /usr/include/mingw/
3) change the application code.

the second way seems preferable to me.
