Hi, I'm using zcat to list the compressed package files in /etc/setup. zcat has problems with linefeed/carriage return as shown below: $ zcat /etc/setup/pcre.lst.gz usr/bin/pcre-config usr/bin/pcregrep.exe usr/include/pcre.h usr/include/pcreposix.h usr/lib/libpcre.a usr/lib/libpcreposix.a usr/man/man 1/pcregrep.1 usr/man/man3/pcre.3 usr/man/man3/pcreposix.3 Additional a zcat --help prints the following: $ zcat --help zcat 1.3 (1999-12-21) usage: zcat [-acdfhlLnNrtvV19] [-S suffix] [file ...] -a --ascii ascii text; convert end-of-lines using local conventions -c --stdout write on standard output, keep original files unchanged -d --decompress decompress -f --force force overwrite of output file and compress links -h --help give this help -l -- list list compressed file cont ents -L --license display software license -n --no-name do not save or restore the original name and time stamp -N --name save or restore the original name and time stamp -q --quiet suppress all warnings -r --recursive operate recursivel y on directories -S .suf --suffix .suf use suffix .suf on compressed files -t --test test compressed file integrity -v --verbose verbose mode -V --version display version number -1 --fast compress faster -9 --best compress better file... files to (de)compress. If none given, use standard input. Report bugs to <bug-gzip AT gnu DOT org>. zcat --help Regards Ralf
