The patch that I had worked up long time ago had the problem that
Eric seems to have found a solution for. I believe I had based mine
on Alastair Houghton's. Nice work.

Eric, it would be good to get into gcc proper. However, for that
you'll need to get a patch against gcc development tree as patches 
against old releases are hardly acceptable given the interim changes 
to the affected files.
