I dunno if this is really a convention.  I do it.  But I'm not sure who 
else does -- I rarely download other maintainers' src packages... <sorry>.

I do recall on several occaisions folks have asked on the list "<NAME>, 
what configuration options did you use to build the <PKG> package?"

Of course, seeing a question on the list does NOT mean that the answer 
doesn't appear in the documentation somewhere... :->
