I've made a new version of binutils available for download.

As usual, this release was generated from the current *CVS version* of
binutils. Although it is an ancestor of the official binutils release,
it is not strictly based on that release.

The reason for this release is to clear up some confusion caused by the
documentation, and proactively prevent some future list traffic by
making --enable-auto-import the default. If we did not do so, then
several upcoming library package updates would have required a ripple
effect of Makefile changes in all packages dependent on those libraries.
We want to avoid that.

This version contains some documentation updates to clarify some
confusion that arose related to the auto-import fixes in the previous
release. That release detected error conditions in auto-import and
reported them; earlier releases silently produced buggy code. However,
the documentation implied that this occured only with certain types of
array and struct references; the new documentation makes it clear that
this error condition occurs, and is reported, for several different
types of multi-word exports.

In addition, this version contains some internal code cleanups to
satisfy earlier objections on the binutils mailing list. These changes
are not user-visible.

Finally, (and most importantly), this release differs from the CVS
version on which it is based in that we make --enable-auto-import the
default. Official binutils CVS should follow suit in about a month. We
hope.

Thanks to Chuck Wilson both for the above words and for the fixes that
he has contributed to binutils.

To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. Then, run setup and answer all of the questions.

Note that we do not allow downloads from sources.redhat.com (aka
cygwin.com) due to bandwidth limitations. This means that you will need
to find a mirror which has this update.

In the US,
ftp://mirrors.rcn.net/mirrors/sources.redhat.com/cygwin/ is a
reliable high bandwidth connection.

In Germany,
ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/pc/gnuwin32/cygwin/mirrors/cygnus/ is
usually pretty good.

In the UK,
http://programming.ccp14.ac.uk/ftp-mirror/programming/cygwin/pub/cygwin/
is usually up-to-date within 48 hours.

If one of the above doesn't have the latest version of this package then
you can either wait for the site to be updated or find another mirror.

The setup.exe program will figure out what needs to be updated on your
system and will install newer packages automatically.

If you have questions or comments, please send them to the Cygwin
mailing list at: cygwin AT cygwin DOT com . I would appreciate if you would
use this mailing list rather than emailing me directly. This includes
ideas and comments about the setup utility or Cygwin in general.

If you want to make a point or ask a question, the Cygwin mailing list
is the appropriate place.
