Scenario:
Windows Server 2012 R2 with a D drive running Cygwin 3.0.4. SYMLINKD created using mklink /D to a UNC path so d:\folder points to \\fileserver\share Windows Server 2016 with a D drive running Cygwin from October 2021 (cygwin1.dll doesn't have a version). SYMLINKD created on the Windows side using mklink /D to a UNC path so d:\folder points to \\fileserver\share

Opening Cygwin and cd'ing to d:\folder and executing cmd on both servers produces different results. On Server 2012 R2 it works just fine, on server 2016 it throws an error and dumps you to c:\windows instead.

Server 2012 R2:
DOMAIN+user AT appserver /cygdrive/d/folder
$ cmd
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]
(c) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

D:\folder>

Server 2016:
DOMAIN+user AT appserver /cygdrive/d/folder
$ cmd
'\\fileserver\share'
CMD.EXE was started with the above path as the current directory.
UNC paths are not supported.  Defaulting to Windows directory.
