I'm wrong, the following test case demontrates that clearly.

$ rm -f /tmp/foo*

$ if [ -e /tmp/foo ] ; then echo yes ; else echo no ; fi
no

$ touch /tmp/foo.exe

$ if [ -e /tmp/foo ] ; then echo yes ; else echo no ; fi
yes

$
