No, it's a bug.  The internal cygdrive path has a trailing slash, which
I have to remove for the symlink.  If the cygdrive path is "/", the
result is an empty path, which is the same as a self-reference.  I fixed
that in CVS.

As a symlink, you can use /proc/cygdrive directly as path component
in a script.  With a text file you couldn't do that.

I wouldn't do that.  The layout is checked by existing scripts.  I wouldn't
want to break that.
