Or more precisely:

'gcc' is short for 'gcc -std=3Dgnu89'
'gcc -pedantic' is short for 'gcc -std=3Dc89 -pedantic'

where the gnu89 standard allows 64-bit types, but the pedantic c89
standard does not.
