additional info, to confirm you that it is not a octave issue,
on my system it works flawless

octave:7> success
success =  1

octave:8> whos
Variables in the current scope:

    Attr Name         Size                     Bytes  Class

         s            1x43708                  43708  char
         success      1x1                          1  logical
         url          1x21                        21  char

so I downloaded 43708 char from google.
