If you want to uninstall, see the FAQ link below: <http://cygwin.com/faq-nochunks.html#faq.setup.uninstall-all> The install should be obvious to you by now. :-) While setup.exe does recognize when you have in-use DLLs during an update, the recovery from this does not seem to be fool-proof. My guess is your problems stemmed from this. Since you'll be installing from a clean system, things work fine.
