Thanks for all the help. Earnie's suggestion worked. I ended up adding:
export LESS_TERMCAP_md=$'\e[1;34m'
in ~/.bashrc, which paints those in bold blue.
Alternatively, making the cmd background a light grey instead of completely
white also works in that the original bold white color is clearly visible.
