on mintty you are clearly using a bash shell, while
the command prompt is not a cygwin shell at all.

Command prompt can not follow cygwin simlink

$ which gcc
/usr/bin/gcc

$ ls -l /usr/bin/gcc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 marco None 21 Nov 13  2011 /usr/bin/gcc ->
/etc/alternatives/gcc

$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/gcc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 marco None 18 Mar 31 15:31 /etc/alternatives/gcc ->
/usr/bin/gcc-4.exe

Use mintty and bash.

Regards
Marco
