Ok, here's what I did to get gitk running again:
- Install the packages xorg-server and xinit
$ rm ~/.gitk
$ startxwin


I was wondering the rationale behind switching to use X11 instead of
GDI. Seems a little heavyweight. This thread sums it up nicely though.
