I always put stuff like this in ~/apps/$APP_NAME-$VERSION and add the 
appropriate bits to PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH and MANPATH... then later when 
I decide to upgrade/change/revert it's a simple matter of changing 
environment veriables...
