Excellent!  Thank you.

And meanwhile, I found that mounting with ihash does in fact avoid the
error (but loses me some data in ls output; not important really).  My
original attempt had apparently been inadequately complete; when I forced
a complete reboot the ihash kicked in (there may be a less drastic way as
well).
