Is there a way to set the Bourne shell as default so i > can launch emacs from it? There's no need to change your default shell; emacs runs fine under bash. Could there be something in your .emacs file that's causing the problem? To eliminate this possibility, start emacs with the command 'emacs -Q', preferably in a mintty window. If something goes wrong, please copy and paste the error message in your reply. Also, please follow the problem-reporting guidelines at http://cygwin.com/problems.html including the part about attaching the output of 'cygcheck -s -v -r'.
