I always use forward slashes for UNC paths in Cygwin.

Typing 'ls //someserver/someshare' is much easier to look at than 'ls
\\\\someserver\\someshare' don't you think?

Although hitting the hidden admin shares does require a slash 'ls
//someserver/ADMIN\$'
