If that's true, then we can't do a simple LOGNAME=$USER...

$ echo -e "USERNAME = $USERNAME\nUSER     = $USER\nLOGNAME  = `logname`"
USERNAME = John
USER     = john
LOGNAME  = John

Note the case...
