Precisely why I've hesitated to take on lots more packages within the 
distro.

I understand; we've done this before (Cygwin/X) and Corinna would like 
me to do another (DocBook, ~25 packages)[1], but beyond that, my current 
goal is only to remove the aformentioned overlaps[2] between the distro 
and Ports.
