This was an unsigned underflow error. Both i and buffer->buf_used are
unsigned:

     for (i = 0; i < buffer->buf_used - 3; i++, p++)

Imagine what happens when buffer->buf_used is "2". Fixed in r26.

Now, back to test.xml with DISPLAY unset...which I can reproduce. Should
be an easy fix.
