Try 'chmod 755 /etc' > from the command line instead. ok I did: chmod -Rvf 0777 /etc /var then: ssh-host-config completed successfully (at last !) I did: $ cygrunsrv -S sshd and I hope SSH service started but have no idea if it really started... On the same machine I opened cmd.exe and did: C:\cygwin\bin>ssh cyg_server AT localhost ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host C:\cygwin\bin>ssh localhost ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host It still does not work.
