Thank you!  That worked, at the expense of having to keep a terminal
open.  I then tried this,

    fetchmail --nodetach >> fetchmail.log 2>&1 &

which leaves the terminal free, doesn't have the pop-up console
windows, and can be killed with "fetchmail -q".
