You have answered my question perfectly, thank you.
I'm sorry that I posed it so badly.
Then line I tried in /etc/fstab
   none / cygdrive binary 0 0
failed because the syntax was wrong. You provided the correct syntax
   none / cygdrive user,posix=0 0 0
and everything works as required.
