When a makefile with that exact name exists in the current directory? That should just work; there's no environment variable to set, and no default path other than the current directory. Try experimenting in a directory where you have no makefile: ~$ ls *akefile ls: cannot access *akefile: No such file or directory ~$ make make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop. ~$ touch Makefile; make make: *** No targets. Stop. ~$ echo 'all:' >Makefile; make make: Nothing to be done for `all'. ~$ make --version GNU Make 3.81 Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
