I've been unable to successfully install Cygwin on an XP SP2 machine
after several tries.
setup.exe appears to complete successfully, after running various
postinstall scripts, but when run, the installation is clearly broken.
The default bash prompt displays, PATH is not set properly, and PWD is
/usr/bin.
I installed by downloading to a local directory, verifying that all
files were downloaded, then installing from a local directory, all using
setup.exe.
From memory, the first time you run a login shell in a new Cygwin
installation, some special scripts run to prepare the environment; this
does not appear to be happening.
Inspecting setup.log and setup.log.full, there are tons of lines which
look like:
2007/04/17 21:04:36 io_stream_cygfile: fopen failed 2 No such file or
directory
Also, most of the postinstall scripts had apparent errors which looked like:
2007/04/17 21:46:36 abnormal exit: exit code=0
This appears to be the same problem that Archana experienced three days
ago here: <http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2007-03/msg00429.html>. I
can't find further reports of this problem, so it seems likely this
breakage is due to a recent change.
Please see a copy of setup.log at
<http://www.cox-internet.com/aaronesque/temp/cygwin/setup.log>. I have
attached the output of "cygcheck -s -v -r" to this message.
