If you had posted this to the mingw list someone might have suggested:

cp -f /lib/mingw/libmsvcr80.a /tmp/libmsvcrt.a
gcc -mno-cygwin -L/tmp foo.c

However, any required dll's that also depended on msvcrt.dll would still
bring in 
the system lib.
