Works for me.

I have in the routers - dnslookup: section
  transport = remote_smtp
  ....
  fallback_hosts = = : outgoing.verizon.net

and in the transports - remote_smtp
  driver = smtp
  hosts_require_auth = outgoing.verizon.net

and I have also a single authentication at the end, with my user name and
password
for outgoing.verizon.net
