As I continue to descend deeper into the rabbit hole.... To think, all this just to try to figure out why rsync is hanging.... So, rather than following the quick 'n dirty suggestion of Igor (Thanks though Igor), I followed the FAQ #15 on installing snapshots with the same problem---cygwin will no longer run with snapshot. Because the error message I get when I try to launch the cygwin shell flashes by too fast to see, I decided to launch a Windows command window and then run bash.exe from there. This is the error I got: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\>cd cygwin C:\cygwin>cd bin C:\cygwin\bin>bash.exe 7 [main] ? (3732) C:\cygwin\bin\bash.exe: *** fatal error - system shared memory version mismatch detected - 0x75BE0084/0x75BE0095. This problem is probably due to using incompatible versions of the cygwin DLL. Search for cygwin1.dll using the Windows Start->Find/Search facility and delete all but the most recent version. The most recent version *should* reside in x:\cygwin\bin, where 'x' is the drive on which you have installed the cygwin distribution. Rebooting is also suggested if you are unable to find another cygwin DLL. C:\cygwin\bin> This was the 1/8 snapshot. Thanks again everyone for helping. At least I'm learning as I peel each new layer from the onion, lol :) -K -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/
