Okay, had a tool logging cpu fans and cpu temps while it was running now:
Max CPU load / CPU Celcius: 100% at 75 degrees
Avarage CPU % / degrees: 50% at 56 degrees
At crash time: 70% load at 58 degrees

Processes reported by windows to be hanging: WMS Idle and XPCOM:EventReceiver.

It wasn't possible to start any new programs or access any resources
(disk or network) by programmes running.

Here is the bash shell printout from the script running:
config.status: executing default-1 commands
Configuring in gcc
e:\cygwin\bin\sh.exe (3268): *** Could not create win32 Mutex for pthread cond s
tatic initializer support.
/tmp/pspdev/gcc-4.0.1/gcc/configure: fork: Bad file descriptor
e:\cygwin\bin\sh.exe (3328): *** couldn't allocate muto 'lock_cs', Win32 error 1

/tmp/pspdev/gcc-4.0.1/gcc/configure: fork: No error
e:\cygwin\bin\sh.exe (1456): *** couldn't allocate muto 'lock_cs', Win32 error 1

/tmp/pspdev/gcc-4.0.1/gcc/configure: fork: No error
e:\cygwin\bin\sh.exe (2816): *** couldn't allocate muto 'lock_cs', Win32 error 1

/tmp/pspdev/gcc-4.0.1/gcc/configure: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable
make: *** [configure-gcc] Error 1
ERROR BUILDING GCC

It crashes a different place in the script, but still with the same symptoms.

The laptop was also places on "stilts" to allow for good ventilation
below it also.

Googling Dell Lattitude D800 shows that heat is a problem with these
machines, but I don't think that 75 degrees is that extreeme for a
laptop?

Cheers
