I know nothing about spfd, but some programs work better in the background
if you kill their input/output (i.e., try
spfd -path=/var/run/spfd </dev/null >/dev/null 2>&1 &
). If this works, I suspect the "non-responsive" spfd process you had
earlier was actually either in the "Output pending" or the "Waiting for
input" state.
