have gcc version 3.4.4 installed, ...

... is your link referring to 3.3.1 ? Are you attempting to rebuild in an
old (already-configured) build tree that's left over from when you had an
earlier version of gcc installed? Did you use a fresh source
checkout/tarball? How did you configure?
